After a shootout loss 24 hours prior, the Penguins were back in action against the Montreal Canadiens for the second half of back-to-back games. This contest marks Lars Eller’s 1,000th career game. Drafted by St. Louis in the first round (13th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft, Eller is the 36th active player, and 388th player in NHL history, to reach the 1,000-game milestone. The Rodovre, Denmark native is the first Danish-born player in NHL history to play 1,000 regular-season games. With under five minutes remaining in the opening period, Guhle put Montreal up 1-0. Guhle’s tally was assisted by former member of the Penguins Mike Matheson and Cole Caufield. Shortly after the start of the 2nd period, who else but Lars Eller tied things up for Pittsburgh with his ninth goal of the season. Eller collected a rebound while driving to the net and buried a wrist shot into the back of the net. Midway through the period, the Canadiens’ Slafkovsky restored Montreal’s lead with his power-play goal. Halfway through the 3rd, Jake Guentzel tied the score once again. Sidney Crosby Gave a no-look pass behind him across the low slot to find Guentzel on the backdoor for the tap-in. For the second night in a row, the Penguins headed into overtime. Rickard Rakell dished the puck wide to Marcus Pettersson to enter the zone. Pettersson had a no-look shot to the top shelf of the net to secure the victory for the Penguins. The Penguins start the All-Star break with a 3-2 victory over the Canadiens.
