Yamaha DT400 Custom Scrambler | Hex Moto Builds the Ultimate Two-Stroke Dream Machine
---
When it comes to custom motorcycle culture, there are a few machines that instantly capture the imagination, and the Yamaha DT400 is certainly one of them. A true icon from the golden era of two-stroke motorcycles, the DT400 holds a special place in history for its rugged versatility and thrilling performance. Now, thanks to Florida-based custom builder Jesse Scott Baumann of Hex Moto, this 1976 classic has been reborn as a spectacular scrambler that blends vintage charm with modern upgrades.
At his shop, Hex Moto, Jesse is known for handling everything from standard repairs to full custom builds. But when a client brought in a DT400 and insisted on a radical transformation, Jesse had both the freedom and the challenge to create something truly unique. While initially reluctant to heavily modify such an iconic motorcycle, Jesse embraced the opportunity, and the result is a machine that feels equal parts heritage and innovation.
The transformation began with a complete teardown, stripping the bike down to its bare essentials. From there, the suspension received a radical upgrade. At the front, the DT400 now wears inverted forks borrowed from a Yamaha FZR1000, mounted using a custom billet aluminum top clamp. At the rear, the swingarm comes from a YZ490, paired with a fresh adjustable shock absorber connected via a tailor-made center mount. These upgrades drastically improve the bike’s handling and stance, giving it a modern, aggressive edge.
The stock subframe was reworked and fitted with a sleek LED lighting strip, while the original wheels were swapped out for aftermarket rims wrapped in burly dual-purpose tires. To match the added performance, the braking system was also upgraded with new disc brakes, premium master cylinders, and enhanced stopping power that far surpasses the original setup.
Visually, Jesse struck a careful balance between old and new. He kept the OEM fuel tank, front fender, and side panels to preserve the DT400’s unmistakable identity, but everything else was reimagined. The subframe supports a new black leather seat with diamond stitching, adding a touch of craftsmanship and style. A handmade rear fender and a front assembly inspired by Husqvarna’s 701, complete with its LED headlight and minimalist fairing, bring modern scrambler vibes to the build.
Under the skin, the DT400’s two-stroke engine remains largely untouched, as it was already in excellent condition. Only small tweaks were added, such as a high-performance pod filter and a compact muffler to optimize airflow and exhaust note. This ensures the bike retains its classic raw two-stroke character while still benefiting from modern reliability upgrades.
Of course, no custom project is complete without a signature paint scheme. For this build, Jesse chose Ferrari’s Verde British Racing hue as the dominant color, accented with subtle gold highlights that enhance its premium feel. The frame and other components were powder-coated black, tying the entire design together with a sleek and durable finish.
The end result is a Yamaha DT400 Scrambler that embodies the dream of many custom enthusiasts: a two-stroke legend rebuilt for the modern era. With its mix of vintage elements, performance-focused upgrades, and a head-turning aesthetic, Hex Moto’s creation shows just how much potential lies within the bones of a classic motorcycle.
For those who admire the artistry of custom builds, the DT400 Scrambler is more than just a project—it’s a statement. It demonstrates respect for history while boldly pushing boundaries, offering both nostalgia and innovation in one stunning package. In short, it’s the kind of bike that will ignite passion whether you’re a two-stroke fan, a scrambler lover, or simply someone who appreciates handcrafted motorcycle art.
