During this election, Libertarian candidate John Hospers and his running mate, Tonie Nathan, received one electoral vote, thanks to a faithless elector. And that would be Roger MacBride, a Republican elector from Virginia, he broke ranks and cast his vote for the Libertarian party . This made Tonie Nathan the first woman in U.S. history to receive an electoral vote in a presidential election.
