Mando which originated in Goa is an event of music, song and dance, which was traditionally hosted by the elite and aristocratic families of those days celebrating a festive occasion. Dulpods then proceeded the Mando.

The Dressing plays a huge role in the Mando. The male performers, who formerly used to wear a cabai – a knee-length loose white top – later took to wearing a formal, European-style, 3-piece suit(Showing Portuguese influence). But the women’s 2-piece attire, a short embroidered top (bazu) worn over a sarong-type, ankle-length skirt (torhop) with a folded scarf or shawl (tuvalo) thrown over one shoulder has undoubtedly been fashioned after the garments worn by women across East Asia, particularly in regions that once formed a part of Portuguese Asia such as Malaysia, Timor and Macau, and also other countries like Thailand, Singapore, Laos and Myanmar. The ceremonial torhop-baz worn during the mando dance was of velvet or silk, red, blue or green in colour, embroidered with gold (rarely with silver) threads. A white or blue shawl was worn. The socks had to be white and the slippers ornamented. This was all graced with a fan, which enhanced the lady’s mood with a secret charm during the dance
The instruments put in the charm to a Mando.Portuguese-introduced instruments like the rebec (violin), piano, and mandolin, and nowadays even the box guitar, are often used as accompaniments for Goan music including the mando. But it is the beats of the Goan ghumot, a traditional percussion instrument, that provide the rhythm for any mando and adds to it that local flavor and vitality. The ghumot is actually a mud pot ingeniously transformed into a musical instrument. It has a wide opening at one end traditionally covered with the tightly stretched skin of the monitor lizard, and a narrower one that is uncovered. The ghumot is like a heart to a mando and is also declared as the State Instrument in Goa.

MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM
We as Goans should strive to promote and make a place of prominence for this fading culture of Goa. Government and organizers should undertake responsibly the task of reviving and maintaining the fading culture and involve citizens to uphold their traditions by providing suitable platforms in addition to the current existing festivals. A sense of belongingness ought to prevail among the younger generation towards the culture and tradition of our mother land.
