The MEDIA SETTINGS screen is used to define the maximum pixel dimensions for media inserted in posts and pages.

WordPress has built-in image reduction feature. It does not enlarge images. It automatically creates up to three images of different sizes, (thumbnail, medium and large) based on these dimensions. The original image is also preserved, so you can have a total of four image sizes saved for each image you upload.
And as long as the original image has either a width or height that is larger than the width or height for any of these setting then that image size will be created. Either the width or the height dimension must be larger that the default set here.
For instance if you upload an image with a width of 320 pixels and a height of 200 pixels then a thumbnail and a medium size image will be created but since neither the 320 or the 200 are greater than the 1024 width set here the large image will not be created.

The default THUMBNAIL maximum size is 150 x 150 pixels, this can be changed to fit your needs. The check box below the size will crop the THUMBNAIL to this exact size. Un-checking the box will re-size the image based on the proportional width and height of the original image.
An image that has the width and height both smaller that the thumbnail width and height set here will only be available in the original size. A 100 x 75 image will only be available in that size. No thumbnail or other image size will be created.

The Medium Size maximum is 300 by 300 pixels and the large maximum size can measure up to 1024 by 1024 pixels.

Although the default settings are usually adequate for most sites, you can set these dimensions to suite your needs.

AUTO-EMBED will attempt to embed media, such as a videos, into your post or page when this box is checked. All that is needed is the URL. This embed feature, however, is ONLY available for media from certain sites that use the oEmbed code. If WordPress cannot use this embed functions then a simple link will be used on the post or page. A list of the sites supported can be found at wordpress.org/Embed with a capital E in embed.

MAXIMUM EMBED SIZE will restrict the embedded media to these dimension. If left blank then it will default to the maximum width of your site theme content area.

UPLOADING FILES enables you to control where the media is stored relative to your WordPress address. The default is set to wp-contents/uploads and is automatically created when you download your first media. If you change this folder then the address enter here must be a folder that is relative to the WordPress address and the field below needs to be filled in.

The FULL URL PATH TO FILES is used if you change the above line to another relative path other than the default. If you change the line above then enter the full path to the new upload directory.

The last check box will organize your uploads by year and then month. This is automatically done by WordPress. For instance if you download a file on July 4th 2012 then that image will be uploaded to a folder at 2012/07 either in the default folder or one that you created. Un-check this box if you don't want WordPress to organize you uploads by year and month.

REMEMBER to save all changes before you exit.
