Letterbox Review for Dave Made a Maze (2017)

This film is so strange and hilarious in exactly a way that felt like it was catering to the part of me that still wanted to be filled with the childlike wonder of an adventure story while still feeding the adult I currently am with some horror aspects. Honestly, it gave me such Goonies (1985) vibes I couldn't stop smiling.

The production value on this Terry Gilliam level of bizarre universe is through the roof. I can't even fathom the amount of time that must have been put into building each set /scene let alone the use of paper for a- a majority of it and b- even the costumes and makeup / fx at points. This could easily feel cheap, but it's done with such care and mastery that it feels like nothing l've ever quite seen before.

Nick Thune and Meera Rohit Kumbhani have wonderful chemistry and were surprisingly nuisanced for a couple that could have just been written as "one is artsy, and the other is practical." James Urbaniak steals the show though, as he often does, as the documentarian who cannot stop getting involved with his “documentary" alongside Frank Caeti and Scott Narver who absolutely nail the feeling of a "quiet doc film crew." In fact, much of this film is very "meta" and often
"Tears holes” in its fourth wall

A story for any and all ADHD artists who know the fear of failure, and how “unfinished" work can at least never run that risk. Dave Made a Maze is a wonderful hidden treasure that replenished part of my burnt out drive to keep making art. 💖🎨
