STORYLINE:
Philippine police used batons and water cannons to disperse hundreds of students and workers attempting to occupy an historic bridge in Manila to dramatise discontent over poverty and inequality.
A police officer said at least five protesters were arrested on charges of illegal assembly following Wednesday's clashes near the presidential palace.
Several protesters were hurt as police charged with water cannons and batons to push them away from the Mendiola bridge in downtown Manila.
It was the second rally in two days.
The students and workers affiliated with left-wing groups say they are "fed up with the rotten system" and want to camp out by the bridge in a protest similar to the "Occupy" movement in the US and elsewhere.
"(President) Noynoy Aquino is no different with (former President Gloria) Arroyo and (Ferdinand) Marcos who prevented the people from expressing their rights and beliefs in Mendiola," said protest leader Mark Louie Aquino, referring to the 1987 massacre on the bridge, near the presidential palace's gates during the presidency of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Protesters say 13 farmers were shot dead during a clampdown on farmers' demonstrations in 1987.
