On Thursday, federal agents made the first arrest in the FBI’s near five‑year hunt for the culprit who planted pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic national headquarters in Washington on the eve of the 6 January 2021 Capitol riot.

Prosecutors say the suspect has been charged with an explosives offence.

It is the first time investigators have named a suspect in a case that baffled law enforcement, fuelled conspiracy theories and lingered as a stark reminder of the violence that scarred that day.

The man in custody is Brian Cole Jr., identified by Attorney General Pam Bondi. He is charged with using an explosive device, with further counts possible as the investigation rolls on.

‘Let me be clear: there was no new tip, no new witness—just diligent police and prosecutorial work,’ Bondi said.
