Kyororo is an interactive, experience-focused natural science museum.

We create exhibits that visitors can look at and enjoy while discovering unique things from the region.
The Satoyama woodland is not a natural forest, but a cultivated ecosystem that has been nurtured by people. There is wisdom and ingenuity in the way that people born here sustainably use their natural resources.
The Satoyama woodland was created as a direct result of people’s involvement in nature. As the population decreases, it becomes impossible to continue maintaining the woodland.
Our goal as a museum is to make people aware of the natural gems of the region that seem commonplace, but are in fact scientifically irreplaceable. As we increase awareness, we would be happy if it brought more visitors and residents to the region, and created a sustainable community for the future.

▼Echigo-Matsunoyama Museum of Natural Science “Kyororo”
　Architects: Tezuka Takaharu and Tezuka Yui Echigo-Matsunoyama Museum of Natural Science “Kyororo”, a small science museum located in the middle of the snowy Satoyama woodlands, is one of the base facilities of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. Visitors can learn about and experience the woodlands through exhibits and interactive programs related to the biodiversity of this region.
As a regional museum, Kyororo also focuses on researching Satoyama biodiversity and culture. The museum aims to conserve the woodlands and create a community by using its research to create exhibitions, provide education and interactive experiences, and promote tourism. Surrounded by "Bijinbayashi," known as the most beautiful secondary beech forest known as in Japan, and "Kyororo no Mori," an approximately 80-hectare woodland, the museum is the ideal venue for various hands-on programs, including nature observation, experiential learning, and plant and animal conservation activities.

▼Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale
The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is one of the largest international art festivals in the world, as well as the pioneer of regional art festivals in Japan. It has provided an alternative way of exploring satoyama by using artwork as the guide. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Field has received fame as an innovator in building community through art, both within Japan and internationally.

The Echigo-Tsumari region has been cultivating rice under the harsh conditions imposed by heavy snowfall since the Jomon era (10,000?300 B.C.). Local people have been exploring the inseparable relationship between human beings and nature while managing their tight-knitted communities. This is the origin of the concept that “human beings are part of nature,” which has become the overarching concept for every installation. Regional development in the Echigo Tsumari region is advanced with the aim of presenting a model for how people can coexist with nature.

▼Japan Heritage “The Ultimate Snow Country: Tokamachi - Fairytale Land of Snowfall”
The Agency for Cultural Affairs recognizes “Japan Heritage” sites as places that tell the story of Japanese culture and traditions through their historic charm and unique characteristics. The purpose of the Japan Heritage Program is to revitalize the region by promoting locations that display tangible and intangible cultural properties, and strategically publicizing the information both domestically and internationally.

In 2020, Tokamachi's story, “The Ultimate Snow Country: Tokamachi - Fairytale Land of Snowfall” was designated a Japan Heritage.
