STORYLINE :
India celebrated the 62nd anniversary of its independence from British rule on Saturday, with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledging to "root out terrorist activities" from the country and offer support to farmers facing drought in large parts of rural India.
Fearing violence in many restive parts, security forces were on high alert across the country for the independence day celebrations.
Singh made his comments while speaking behind a bullet proof screen from the historic Red Fort, the massive 17th-century sandstone structure built by the Mughal emperors who ruled much of modern-day India before the British arrived.
Parts of the airspace over New Delhi were also declared a no-fly zone as sharp-shooters kept a vigil from rooftop of high-rise buildings and helicopters patrolled the skies.
India and Pakistan gained independence when the departing British split the subcontinent in 1947 - and saw it quickly overshadowed by one of the most violent upheavals of the 20th century.
Some 10 (m) million people moved across borders in one of history's largest mass migrations as the princely states sewn together in 200 years of British rule were divided into Muslim Pakistan, which celebrated its independence on Friday, and Hindu-majority India.
India and Pakistan have been adversaries since then, having fought three wars and conducted tit-for-tat nuclear tests.
Peace talks between the neighbours, which started in 2004, stalled after the three-day rampage in Mumbai that killed 166 people in November last year by alleged Pakistani gunmen.
Singh also pledged on Saturday a willingness to work with India's neighbours claiming, "we want to live with them in peace and harmony."
