For those unfamiliar Devil May Cry is hack and slash action games centered around demon slayer Dante, himself half demon; son of the renegade devil Sparda who betrayed Hell to clear his conscience. Armed with twin pistols Ebony and Ivory as well as his massive sword Dante runs a sort of extermination business with supernatural creatures of darkness as his targets. In the first game a mysterious woman enters his store and proceeds to beat him nearly to death, later revealing this to be a test of his abilities. Afterwards she offers him a job to hunt down and destroy the devil Mundus, but all is not as it seems on this particular mission...
One of the great things about Dante for me as a character is how jubilant he is in his work, throwing off careless one liners and regarding even the most terrifying monsters with an aloof cockiness that's just innocent enough to be endearing. He's not a brooding, haunted warrior, he's a workmanlike kid who likes hitting things with his big sword: a welcome shake up of a genre which is sometimes mired in overly serious tones.
