About tonight’s music

Tonight we go "Bach to Basics" and take a look at form in music. But what is form? It's the structure or framework that gives our music shape. Just like a popular song may have an introduction, a verse, and a chorus - our music tonight has its own special shape.

In its simplest state, we'll hear a theme. Think of this like a musical sentence. It has a clear idea, but it's short and to the point. You'll hear several different themes from our 6th-grade band. Our 7th graders will perform a theme and variations. This form takes that musical sentence and turns it into a paragraph, exploring the same idea from lots of different points of view. Our 8th-grade band extends this idea with an accompanied canon. This form of music takes a theme (in this case, a musical idea that repeats itself) and then layers new ideas around it. It's as if we've turned our paragraph into a fully developed research paper. Lastly, our High School band will perform Bach's Fugue in C Minor - a master work of form! A fugue, like a canon, has a theme that repeats itself, but this time new ideas are densely layered in complex harmonies. Behold! Within the fugue, we've moved from a simple sentence to an intense and nuanced conversation!

Sprinkle in a festive winter favorite such a Jingle Bells, a nostalgic movie score from Home Alone or The Polar Express, and a light, bouncy treasure such as Sledding and you have a delightful winter concert to bring in the season!

Thank you for spending an evening with us! Your support tonight, at home, and everywhere in between is perhaps the sweetest music of all.

Musically yours,
Amy Simons, Director of Bands
