The case of William Dresser is a tragic instance of a "mercy killing" that parallels the Ellen Gilland case but took place in Carson City, Nevada. In January 2014, the 88-year-old Dresser brought a small-caliber handgun into Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center and shot his 86-year-old wife, Frances, in her hospital bed. Frances had been paralyzed from the chest down following a fall at their home, and Dresser told investigators he intended to "end her suffering" and then take his own life. However, his weapon jammed after the first shot, and he was subdued by hospital security and nearby law enforcement.


Dresser was initially charged with "open murder," as Nevada law does not distinguish between homicide and mercy killings. However, in June 2015, the District Attorney filed a motion to dismiss the charges. The decision was influenced by the fact that Frances had reportedly expressed a desire to die, the couple's children requested that their father not be prosecuted, and the prosecutor determined there was "no component of evil" to Dresser's actions. Dresser, who had been married to Frances for 63 years and had no prior criminal history, was ultimately allowed to return home to his family without serving time in prison, though the case sparked significant national debate over assisted suicide laws.
