Hungary qualified for the finals of the UEFA Euro 1972 which was held in Belgium. After dominating France (defeated again in Colombes), Bulgaria and Norway in the qualifiers, they face in the quarter-finals the team from Romania. After two draws (1-1 in Budapest then 2-2 in Bucharest ), a support match was organized in Belgrade , which Hungary won in the final moments (2-1).

In the semi-finals, Hungary faced the Soviet Union and lost 1–0, Sándor Zámbó seeing his penalty saved by Soviet goalkeeper Rudakov five minutes from the end. In the third place play-off, Hungary lost to Belgium 2–1. The only Hungarian goal was scored by Lajos Kű. Hungary finished fourth in at the Euro. Albert was a shadow of his former-self, but still the squad rocked Dunai (the former silver-boot behind Eusebio), then Bene, young talent Kocsis and also Zambo from Ujpest.

The Hungarians would not appear at the European Championship again for 44 years until UEFA Euro 2016.
