जगन्नाथ पुरी हिंदुओं के सबसे प्राचीन और पवित्र स्थलों में से एक है। यहां भगवान कृष्ण सहित उनकी बहन सुभद्रा और भाई बलराम की मूर्तियां विराजमान हैं। लेकिन एक चीज़ जो इस मंदिर को रहस्यमयी बनाती है..वो है ब्रह्म पदार्थ। आखिर क्या है ये ब्रह्म पदार्थ? जिसे आज तक किसी ने नहीं देखा। दरअसल पुरी के मंदिर में हर 8, 11 या 19 साल बाद भगवान जगन्नाथ सहित तीनों मूर्तियां बदली जाती हैं। जिस रात ये पूरी प्रक्रिया की जाती है, उस समय सारे शहर की लाइट बन्द कर दी जाती है। यहां तक कि इस कार्य को करने वाले पुजारी की आंखों पर पट्टी बांध दी जाती है और उनके हाथों पर कपड़े लपेट दिए जाते हैं, ताकि किसी भी तरह वे ब्रह्म पदार्थ को देख या छू न सकें। और इसी तरह वो बिना देखे पुरानी मूर्तियों से ब्रह्म पदार्थ को निकालकर नई मूर्तियों में रख देते हैं। ब्रह्म पदार्थ के रहस्य को लेकर कई तरह के मत प्रचलित हैं। जिनमें से सबसे मान्य मत यह है कि ब्रह्म पदार्थ कुछ और नहीं बल्कि श्रीकृष्ण का दिल है। जो उनके अंतिम संस्कार के वक्त अग्नि में जल नहीं पाया था और फिर द्वारका के समुद्र में अस्थियों सहित बहा दिया गया। जो बह कर पुरी तट पर आ पहुंचा था। इसे ही विराजमान मूर्तियों में रखा गया है। इसी तरह मान्यता है कि ये विष्णु अवतार भगवान बुद्ध के दांत हैं। ये दांत उस समय कलिंग के महाराज के पास थे और उन्होंने ही शायद इसे मन्दिर में रखवा दिया हो। वहीं कुछ का मानना है कि ये श्रीकृष्ण की समयंतक मणि है। तो कुछ कहते हैं कि ये एक स्वर्ण यन्त्र है जिस पर खास मन्त्र लिखे गए हैं। एक और मत के अनुसार ब्रह्म पदार्थ असल में शालिग्राम है। जिसकी कृष्ण के रूप में ही पूजा होती है। तो वहीं कुछ विद्वान मानते हैं कि ये राधा कृष्ण की निद्रा अवस्था वाली मूरत है, जो आत्मा का प्रतीक है और समय समय पर मूति रूपी शरीर बदलती रहती है। कहते हैं कि जब सती के आत्म दाह के बाद भगवान विष्णु ने उनके शरीर के टुकड़े कर शक्तिपीठों की स्थापना की, उसी समय सती की नाभि उड़ीसा में आ गिरी। जिसे वहां के पुजारियों ने उठा लिया और मन्दिर में रख दिया। उसी को अब ब्रह्म पदार्थ कहा जाता है। ब्रह्म पदार्थ को रखने वाले एक पुजारी के अनुसार, वो उनके हाथों में किसी खरगोश की भांति उछल रहा था। जिस से बहुत से लोगों ने ये अंदाज़ा लगाया कि शायद ये पारे जैसी कोई चीज़ होगी। कहा ये भी जाता है कि ये कोई उल्का पिंड या अंतरिक्ष से आया हुआ पत्थर है जो रेडीयो एक्टिव है। और शायद यही कारण है कि इसकी ऊर्जा या तरंगों को कंट्रोल में रखने के लिए यहां भगवान की मूर्ति लड़की की बनाई जाती है। जबकि भारत में लकड़ी की ऐसी मूर्तियां कहीं और देखने को नहीं मिलतीं। बहरहाल ये सारी बातें अलग अलग लोगों और विद्वानों के कयास हैं। ब्रह्म पदार्थ असल में है क्या, ये तो स्वयं भगवान जगन्नाथ ही जानते हैं।

According to another belief, Brahman substance is actually shaligram. Which is worshipped as Krishna. So at the same time, some scholars believe that this Radha is the idol of Krishna's sleeping state, which symbolizes the soul and the body changes from time to time. It is said that when Lord Vishnu cut Shakti Peetha after Sati's self-sacrificing his body, Sati's navel fell in Orissa. The priests took it there and placed it in the temple. The same is now called Brahman material. According to a priest who held the Brahman material, he was leaping like a rabbit in his hands. From which many people had guessed that maybe it would be something like mercury. It is also said that this is a meteorite or a stone coming from space which is radioactive.
