Tom Watson vs Stewart Cink | Great Final Days

Many names were assured of challenging for the Claret Jug at Turnberry 2009, but few gave Tom Watson any chance of being one of them.

The five-time Open champion had last won at Royal Birkdale back in 1983 but had been a popular and regular addition to most Opens since then. Few believed that the 59-year-old would make the cut, much less have the staying power to compete for the title.

As the legendary Watson defied expectations, a crop of young and previously untested competitors were all striving to win their first Open title. Lee Westwood, Stewart Cink, Mathew Goggin and Ross Fisher had all played themselves into contention in some way or another.

Sunday at The 138th Open was going to be one that would be spoken about in the years and by the generations to come regardless of who emerged victorious.

Here is the story of the great final day from Turnberry in 2009.
