Took my bride of 27 years to see a stand up comedian named Owen Benjamin that I heard was very controversial to the powers that be in social media and was suspended from some social media platforms to see for ourselves what all the bru ha ha was about . My first encounter with live comedy was in college over four decades ago and I admit I'm really out of the loop these days. What I saw with him and his warm up act was good old standard bash every group, religion and political outlook comedy mixed with the usual gross sexual stuff that I remembered from years ago. The first act who I'd never even heard of was an African-American and bashed all including his own people and really went after Muslims and Catholics. I thought they were both very very funny.The point is these guys were in the mold of Lenny Bruce over 50 years ago and look what happened to him. The first comedian summed it up very nicely. He said "If you're offended then get the F out!" If we let all powerful big tech control social media this way and presumably solicit offended trolls to prop up claims of violating community standards in an effort to squelch speech they don't like then not only comedy dies but free speech dies with it. Lenny Bruce said it straight out. "Don't take my words". Social media is the public square these days. Community standards now with big tech is just an arbitrary and subjective standard excuse to suspend or ban whatever big tech doesn't like for political and social reasons. If you're personally offended by content I have a friendly suggestion. Customize your content for what you want to see and ignore the rest. I've heard it's not all that hard to do on social media. And leave the rest of us alone. Your content for you and mine for me and we both have a nice life.
