Picked up Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for a couple bucks at Goodwill — complete in box, manual included, and just enough sun damage to make you shake your fist at the sky. The problem? My Sega Genesis is in storage, and I really wanted to try this game.

Luckily, I remembered I have one of those open-source cartridge readers I got off AliExpress for about $100. It’s bare bones — just some boards, switches, a knob, and a whole lot of potential. It’s great if your game is in the database. Otherwise? Good luck.

Before dumping, I opened the cart using my "every-bit-on-earth" screwdriver set, cleaned the contacts (eraser → alcohol → eraser again), and noticed a chipped pin. Fingers crossed, I popped it into the reader, powered up, selected Genesis… and boom. It recognized it instantly.

Did a full read, got the “it worked” message, pulled the SD card, navigated to the MD (Mega Drive) directory, and there it was: Pitfall. Copied the ROM to my PC, fired up an emulator, and it played flawlessly.

Could I have just downloaded the ROM? Maybe, but it's so satisfying to dump your own.
