In this presentation, the focus will be on the integration of AI literacy into library instruction, emphasizing its importance as a progressive skillset. AI literacy is defined as the ability to understand, use, monitor, and critically reflect on AI applications. We will align AI literacy with the ACRL Frameworks, highlighting its connection to digital, media, and data literacy.
Key points include:
Demystifying AI: Understanding AI as computer science, not magic.
Demythologizing AI: Differentiating between AI hype and reality.
Demonstrating AI: Using AI to achieve goals.
Democratizing AI: Ethical use of AI in society.
In this presentation, we will also address the risks associated with AI, such as ethical, legal, privacy, and bias issues, and the need for new skills and competencies in the AI era. The evolving role of library professionals, including improved search and discovery, content creation, personalized recommendations, and the use of chatbots and virtual assistants will be explored. Steps to cultivate AI skills will be outlined, including experimenting with AI tools, collecting and researching information, and participating in webinars and workshops. The importance of creating an AI community of practice will be emphasized, with suggestions for institutional, departmental, and professional association involvement. The presentation will also cover integrating AI into library workflows, such as task automation, virtual assistants, and various AI applications in library tasks. We will focus on the benefits of teaching with AI, including automating routine tasks, optimizing digital and AI literacy skills, and promoting an upskilled workforce. Finally, the presentation will make some predictions on the future role of librarians in AI instruction, emphasizing enhanced instructional support, AI literacy programs, virtual reference services, collaborative AI use, ethical guidance, and continuous professional development.
