Описание к видео Ep. 24: Loving Bad Movies | A Discussion with Matt Strohl

Matt Strohl (University of Montana | he/him) and Brandon Polite (Knox College | he/him) discuss Strohl's book Why It's OK to Love Bad Movies (Routledge 2021: https://www.routledge.com/Why-Its-OK-....

We begin by discussing the central distinction of Strohl's book: enjoying bad movies because you genuinely love them versus enjoying ridiculing bad movies. Strohl argues that the former is the better mode of engagement.

We then discuss what makes some movies "so bad they're good"? Strohl's view is that such movies violate certain cinematic norms (of storytelling, acting, editing, etc.) in non-serious, and thus enjoyable, ways. This leads us to briefly consider why some movies are lovably bad while others arent.

From there, we consider the value of negative film criticism when it's done properly and how it contrasts with ridicule, which Strohl thinks is largely about demonstrating one's superiority to those involved in making movies one deems as bad and the fans of those movies.

We next consider the implicit virtue ethics of Strohl's book regarding how to go about appreciating bad movies. This leads me to ask Strohl whether I should give up the Schadenfreude I feel toward Tommy Wiseau, which constitutes part of my enjoyment of his good-bad movie *The Room*.

We then discuss whether any movies deserve ridicule or something close to it. Strohl answers that some do, but not the good-bad ones.

We conclude by briefly considering whether loving bad movies is indicative of having bad taste.
