Matt hard at work applying BASF Thoroseal concrete based coating to basement walls. Mix with water, but add some white acrylic bonding agent. We use a wallpaper brush for application. Works great. No leaks. Superior to a simple paint job or the purported waterproof basement wall paints. Why? Because it is concrete based, not a paint. I have bought probably 8-10 metal buckets of the white. Got them at Ace Hardware. About $40 for about 40 pounds. Renamed it MasterSeal 581 (or 582?)

For preparing these fieldstone walls (ie. etching), I used muriatic acid in a common hand sprayer (you'll probably ruin the sprayer gasket after one use). I put a box fan in one basement window downwind (with the fan facing to the outside), and opened the opposing window. In the window opening, I sealed the sides around the box fan to the window edges in order to improve the exhaust efficiency. I used a commercial grade acid/vapor respirator (w/charcoal), along with heavy duty, acid resistant, rubber gloves to the elbows, and a faceshield to protect the eyes. I used to sell safety products, so this was easy for me. But you may want to go to a safety supply house, often alongside welding products distributors.

Prep: To prep the walls, I used a garden house to get any crud off. Then, after letting it dry for days (important), I sprayed the muriatic full strength and let it sit for hours with the fan running. Caution. If you do this, and the box fan doesn't remove the fumes quickly, ALL metal in your basement, from power tools to everything else metal will be etched by the acid. After the acid is no longer reactive, you can rinse.

Rinse: I used a garden house to rinse. And if the fan doesn't remove the moisture cloud quickly, ALL the uncovered metal in the basement (pipe wrenches, saw blades, etc. I wasn't too concerned with aesthetics) will also have a thin film of rust. I haven't noticed any damage to copper piping. A lot depends on how quickly you can remove the fumes. Before applying the Thoroseal, I like using another hand sprayer to apply a fine mist of water to the walls to make sure the concrete can cure without having the water sucked out of it by dry walls.

I've not had a problem with leaks on an over 100 year old fieldstone basement with crumbling mortar. I did have to touch-up two or three spots after the rainy season (which I marked with a red marker).

I've recommended to a neighbor and he liked it too. I would never use a waterproofing paint while this superior product is available. Paint is too temporary for my taste.
