First up, the big news is that the GR Corolla now comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. I know, I know, some of you might be cringing at the thought of losing the manual, but don't worry! Toyota's made sure this new Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT) is smarter and more responsive than the automatics in the GR Supra and GR86. It uses driver inputs like brake and accelerator pressure to make shifts feel more urgent and intuitive. So, while we're still mourning the manual-only days a little bit, at least they didn't replace the manual altogether!
The turbocharged three-cylinder is still a beast, cranking out an impressive 300 horsepower. The torque has been bumped up to 295 pound-feet, which is 22 more than last year. This is the same output as the 2023 limited Morizo edition, but now it's standard across all 2025 models. And here's something I love: every GR Corolla now comes with front and rear limited-slip differentials as standard. No more hoping the one at the dealer has the right options—it's all included, even on the base CORE model.
Toyota didn't stop at just adding an automatic transmission and tweaking the engine. They've also made some key handling improvements. After testing at Fuji Speedway, they realized they needed better traction during hard cornering. So, they added rebound springs to the front and rear shocks to prevent wheel lift. They also raised the trailing-arm mounting point to reduce acceleration squat and make cornering more stable.
For 2025, the GR Corolla comes in three trim levels: Core, Premium, and a new Premium Plus. The Core is your entry-level model, but it’s packed with performance goodies. The Premium trim adds some nice creature comforts like JBL audio, GR-logo suede seats, dual-zone climate control, and heated steering wheel and seats. It also includes front and rear parking sensors and fascia with functional air vents. The Premium Plus takes it up a notch with options like a forged carbon-fiber roof, a bulge hood with functional air vents, a sub-radiator, matte black wheels, a head-up display, and red stitching on the seats.
We don’t have all the details yet, but we expect a modest increase from the 2024 base model, which starts at $37,635 with a manual gearbox. As for the cost of the new automatic transmission, it’s still up in the air. It could be free like in the GR Supra, or it might add around a thousand bucks like in the GR86.
