Patrick Philbin, deputy White House counsel, said it wasn’t necessary to have new information -- such as witnesses, which Democrats have been arguing are necessary -- presented in the Senate impeachment trial now. Philbin suggested that it’s a matter that could be decided later, after all cases have been presented.

Philbin said it was the “rational thing” to hear everyone’s cases, including President Donald Trump’s defense, and then decide if more information is required. Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December on two articles — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate will now decide whether to convict Trump of those charges and remove him from office, or acquit him.
