The crippling surge in Covid-19 cases has exposed glaring gaps in the country’s health infrastructure.India reported more than 3.46 lakh cases and 2,624 people died in the last 24 hours.(as of 24th April)

There is a major oxygen crisis in all the hospitals in India.Officially, India’s daily oxygen production capacity is 7,127 MT and its medical oxygen requirement has increased by 76 percent in 10 days — from 3,842 MT on April 12 to 6,785 MT on April 22.

On paper, that leaves the country with a few hundred metric tons still to spare, but state after state has been complaining of acute shortage.Until 2019, before the pandemic hit the country, India required just 750-800 MT liquid medical oxygen (LMO), because of the crisis, doctors and other experts have been looking for alternatives, - one of which is oxygen compensator.

An oxygen concentrator is an alternative to using oxygen cylinders, which are both used in the process of oxygen therapy to help people who fail to get suitable oxygen to breathe and for the proper functioning of the body. It concentrates oxygen from ambient air. The oxygen concentrator takes in this air, filters it through a sieve, releases the nitrogen back into the air, and works on the remaining oxygen. This oxygen, compressed and dispensed through a cannula, is 90-95 percent pure.

According to a 2015 report by the WHO, concentrators are designed for continuous operation and can produce oxygen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for up to 5 years or more. While the cylinders need to be refilled after their capacity is fully consumed. Experts say it is good enough for mild and moderate Covid19 patients with oxygen saturation levels of 85% or above. It is, however, not advisable for ICU patients. Oxygen concentrators are the easiest alternatives to cylinders but can only supply 5-10 liters of oxygen per minute.

Critical patients may need 40-50 liters per minute) and are best suited for moderately ill patients. While at Rs 40,000-90,000 concentrators are more expensive than cylinders (Rs 8,000-20,000), it’s largely a one-time investment. Industry experts say the demand for oxygen concentrators has gone up from 40,000 annually to 30,000-40,000 a month . With the increase in the cases of covid19 oxygen concentrator is referred to as s a true life-saver.
