The 1985 James Hardie 1000 was the first time the race was held exclusively for cars complying with the Australian version of International Group A touring car regulations.

Tom Walkinshaw qualified on pole position and was leading
the race with co-driver Win Percy until about 40 laps from the finish.

His Jaguar XJS V12 developed an oil surge which took a few laps
in the pits to rectify. John Goss and Armin Hahne eventually won
the race in the #10 Jaguar, with Tom & Win fighting back to third.
