Wheat Production Technology in Salts affected Soils or Saline - Sodic Soils:
Salts in soils are big hurdles in seeds germination. Wheat seeds germination is badly affected by salts presence in saline soils. Salinity is a big problem with our soils. Salinity can be reclamed by many biological and chemical methods.
Wheat is a staple food in Pakistan. Our average yield of wheat crop in Pakistan is 30 which is very low as compared to other same countries. Farmers can improve average yield and wheat production by following the methods of wheat cultivation in saline or saline sodic soils as our 10 million plus area is saline or saline sodic. We tried to cover all aspects of wheat cultivation in saline soils from wheat seed sowing to fertilization and irrigation. These are tips or steps to achieve maximum wheat grains yield in saline or saline-sodic soils.
a) Variety selection: Faisalabad-2008, Anaj-2017 and Ujala-2017 are best wheat cultivars to grow in saline soils.
b) Soaking of wheat seeds in canal water for 12 hours.
c) Dry sowing method in case of sandy saline soils and Gupchhut method in case of loamy soils.
d) 4 bags Single Super Phosphate SSP, 1 bag Sulphate of Potash SOP and 2 bags Ammonium Sulphate with first irrigation.
e) 50 kg Sulphuric acid at seed sowing time with water and 10 kg Sulphuric acid fertigation with first irrigation in wheat of saline soils.
f) Irrigate field after 20-25 days after sowing and keep the soil moist so as to keep salts below plants root zone.
g) Use Gypsum in soils at land preparation time in case of saline irrigational water.
h) Application of Farmyard manure, poultry manure or leaves debris waste compost increases the soil fertility and decreases the harmful effects of saline water on crops productivity.
i) Deep ploughing should be practiced in soils where wheat is to be grown first time.
