(9 Dec 2014) United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spoke on Tuesday at the climate change conference in Lima, Peru.
The high-level phase of the COP20 talks kicked off with dancers, musicians and actors performing traditional dances and ceremonies from Peruvian indigenous people.
Delegates from more than 190 countries are trying to produce a draft agreement that will be negotiated over the next year and adopted at a conference in Paris in December 2015.
Ban applauded the recent agreement between the United States and China, the two largest emitters of greenhouse gases, which he said provides foundation for even "higher-level of ambition".
But he urged more commitment to forge a draft for a hoped-for agreement in Paris a year from now.
The inauguration was only attended by one Head of State, Bolivian President Evo Morales, who criticised the new "simulation of international agreements that never happen."
He said Bolivians was already feeling the effects of climate change.
The two-week meeting in Peru's capital ends on December 12.
