“The stories we tell show who we are.” —Nohelia from Bushwick, Brooklyn 💚
Thank you, fam, for sharing your stories and creating with us! Families crafted personal quilt squares to tell stories of joy, growth, and healing for our large public art project Patchwork Quilt.
Brooklyn FAM ran the Patchwork Quilt project at 8 events across the borough of Brooklyn, gathering a total of 120 personal quilt squares from Brooklynites across four generations. In design collaboration with the Brooklyn FAM team, Williamsburg-based master quilter Sylvia Hernandez stitched the squares into the shape of the borough, overlaid on a flourishing tree and its roots, to honor our individual stories of joy, growth, and healing and to symbolize our interconnectedness.
We unveiled the gorgeous 9 by 10-foot quilt at Brooklyn FAM 2023, our 3rd annual flagship festival at the Prospect Park Boathouse on Sunday, October 22, 2023. The quilt's first community exhibition is at the Brooklyn Children's Museum from mid-November 2023 through March 2024.
