Science published today a new method for creating a graphene membrane with pores whose size, shape and density can be tuned with atomic precision. This is a major milestone in graphene research, and brings us one step closer to unlocking this wonder material’s full potential not only in electronics, but also in filtration and sensing applications.

The breakthrough is the result of a close collaboration between the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Center for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CiQUS) at the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), and was published this week in Science. A patent has also been filed.
