I wish I was a tree plant my roots in the ground
I'd whisper to the birds that just sing and hang around
I'd linger there for years, a hundred maybe more
Just knowing that there's nothing that I'm waiting for
I'd be there for the lovers carving names into me
I'd never feel a thing except the gentle breeze
They'd lie close to each other and laugh at my feet
And then the day would end and he'd say something sweet

And then summer would end as the sun hides away
My leaves would make me beautiful and so would the rain
I'd cater to the animals that make me their home
I'd never mind the company, it beats being alone
And then I'd watch my leaves go and do what they do best
And I'd watch the blades of grass as they lay themselves to rest
For then the snow would come and everything would freeze
And I'd look out at the beauty that's right in front of me

But instead I am a person, a hippie if you will
I watched them cut you down and print off paper bills
And that money trades for tickets that they use at my shows
As I sing and strum for peace into the microphone
Then hopefully the crowd would smile and applaud
And then I would smile back because I know that they're just frauds
But then I'd see the lovers that once carved their names
And I'd look at my guitar and I'd bow my head in shame

That's why I swore an oath to love and never hate
An organic beating heart with a simple twist of fate
I'd stand up for the innocent, the broken and the real
Because I know what it's like to have something I can't feel
Now I want to get you thinking before this song is done
What is there to do when all the good is gone?
And as you're lowered down the last thing that you see
