“I’m going up a river to deliver medical supplies and antivenoms to a small village,” says Dr Kevin Pondikou, the only doctor treating snakebites in Papua New Guinea’s remote Western Province. From his tiny jungle hospital in Rumginae, he treks by foot or takes a light aircraft to reach isolated communities. Here, snakebites are a death sentence. 300,000 cases a year and 2,000 deaths —half of them children. The taipan, one of the world’s most venomous snakes, kills in just 20 minutes and it’s Pondikou’s fiercest enemy. Whether in his jungle hospital or trying to reach a village by tractor, the doctor races against time to deliver one of the rarest medicines in the region — antivenom.
