The next hashtag#FedConnect2025 session, Research on Suggestibility of Memory, was with Professor Fiona Gabbert as she discussed the work that she and her colleague Dr Madison Harvey have been doing, leading a research study exploring police officer experiences and views on reviewing body-worn video footage post-incident procedures.

“As a psychologist, my research is always focused on human memory and the reliability of people’s memory and an emphasis on what makes it more reliable or less reliable.

“Our recent research was focusing on the reliability of memory but this time with an extra component involved which is the ability to consult or review body worn video footage which I allowed because currently officers can review their footage before writing their statement but for, a psychological point of view, there are benefits to that but there is also risks associated with that.

“The benefits are that it can legitimately jog your memory, it also people are keen to do it because it increases the consistency between what the body worn video shows and what your memory reports.

“The risk from a psychological view is that memory is very easily contaminated.”
