Senior Awami League leader and former Bangladesh Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen has died in custody, raising serious questions over custodial treatment ahead of the country’s general election. The 83-year-old veteran politician died on Saturday while lodged in Dinajpur District Jail, after reportedly falling ill and being rushed to hospital. Sen had been in custody since August 2024 in connection with multiple cases linked to post-uprising political unrest. His death comes at a sensitive time, with the Awami League barred from the February 12 polls under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. The incident has intensified allegations of custodial neglect and concerns over the safety of minority leaders in Bangladesh.
