1. Find a shocking way to get your audience at the edge of their seats. (0:40)

During Bill Gates’ TED talk on malaria a few years ago, which is a disease that is spread through mosquitos, he opened a small box with a couple of them in it and said well, there’s no reason for only poor people to experience this disease, so I’m just going to let these roam, which was both hilarious and shocking. Of course, the mosquitos weren’t infected by malaria, but you can imagine how the audience felt during that presentation. They were paying attention.

Gates has used this shock factor in different ways as he’s presented his most popular talks over the years whether it’s through statistics about how a global pandemic can destroy our economies or titles like innovating to zero, Gates is big on using shock to unite people to achieve a goal or outcome. This is how to present like Bill Gates.

The lesson for all of us is thinking how we can leverage shock in our presentations, I do this through my personal story where I talk about how I presented my whole life in a language I didn’t even know which was French, so go out there and try 1-2 shocking ways of bringing out your ideas to the world and see what happens.

2. True intelligence is explaining a topic in a way that anyone can understand it. (2:06)

Gates is probably one of the smartest people on the planet, he runs through books in the same way we run through a bag of potato chips, he’s probably read 100’s, if not 1000’s of them over the course of his life, but what I find interesting is how simple his presentations are.

Watch any of his TED talks, every single slide, pretty much anyone can understand what he’s saying, which is odd given the amount of information he has in his brain on that very topic, so why does he make the decision to simplify everything he says? This is how to present like Bill Gates.

The reason is because he wants everyone to get it. Just because he’s a super smart guy, doesn’t mean we all read a book a week like he does, and since he wants more people to think about finding solutions to the problems he’s bringing up in his talks whether it’s malaria or innovation or anything, he’s forced to explain his ideas in the easiest possible way so more people can join in on the conversation.

3. Don’t be afraid to build presentations in a way that’s authentic to you. (3:32)

Gates doesn’t try to be like anyone else. He knows that he’s a book worm and obsessed with technology, he drives a lot of his ideas in presentations with data, science and facts, that’s who he is and how he likes to think through these topics with his audiences. There’s nothing wrong with that. Gates is a great example of someone who just uses any tools that they prefer and enjoy using the best that they’re comfortable with provided that everyone understands what he’s saying.

You don’t need to be funny, or loud or cheesy, you just need to be the best version of you. Use the tools that you’re the most excited about first, pick the strategies and ideas that you want to use to defend what you think is right. I compare public speaking to dance, karaoke, puzzles and martial arts – people in my industry think I’m crazy and that’s OK, the point is that my audience, who might not have a Ph.D in communication enjoy that I’m a bit crazy with my presentations, in the same way Gates isn’t afraid to say a couple of jokes while he presents scientifically based ideas. This is how to present like Bill Gates.
