The UMB CURE scholars spent their Saturday at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry for Oral Health Promotion Day. They learned about the importance of oral health and how to properly brush and floss. After a presentation, some of the scholars had protective sealants applied to their teeth by dental hygiene students which will help prevent cavities for up to 15 years. Meanwhile, the rest of the scholars worked with the dental students to come up with their own raps about dental specialties and what they learned about oral health. They were divided into teams and them competed in a rap battle! Finally, all of the scholars went upstairs to the dentistry labs to participate in Planet Smilez which is a program founded by a UMB alumni, Kathryn Pawlak, DDS, ‘19. The CURE Scholars got to use professional dental equipment to carve out a tooth mold from a bar of soap and they also learned how to suture oral wounds by practicing on a hot dog.
