(18 Sep 2014) A Colombian women's cycling team said on Wednesday (17 September) that they won't stop wearing flesh-coloured uniforms despite criticism from the International Cycling Union president.
SCRIPTING INFORMATION:
The six cyclists held a news conference in the capital Bogota wearing the controversial uniforms, which have a flesh-coloured section between the stomach and thighs.
They wore the uniforms at the Tour of Tuscany in Italy over the weekend.
Team member Angie Rojas helped design the uniforms that caught worldwide attention when photos of them circulated on social media.
"I've already said that I designed the uniform and, as an athlete, as a woman, as the cyclist that I am, I wouldn't be ashamed with this kind of design," Rojas said.
Two of the team's three corporate sponsors said they support keeping the uniform.
A third corporate sponsor has yet to come out publicly with its stance.
International Cycling Union President Brian Cookson wrote on his Twitter account that the uniforms were "unacceptable by any standard of decency."
Pictures of the team shared on social media prompted Cookson's response.
