Dumbledore's theory about the mysterious potion was completely wrong. In his quest to retrieve the Horcrux, Dumbledore believed that the potion would not kill its drinker, but instead, it would stop them and notify Voldemort. However, as it turns out, the potion was not only deadly, but it was also specifically designed to kill whoever drank it in a slow and painful way. While the potion was not immediately fatal, it was specifically designed to force the drinker to either go to the lake and be drowned by the Inferi or die of thirst. Dumbledore's miscalculation of the potion's true nature raises the question, did he really believe his own theory, or was he trying to convince Harry to help him?
