Tomatoes are native to South America.
Genetic evidence suggests that tomatoes evolved from small green fruit trees common in the highlands of Peru

The first domesticated tomato was possibly a yellow fruit, similar to the cherry tomato, cultivated by the Aztecs of Central Mexico.

The Spanish explorer Cortés may have been the first to bring small yellow tomatoes to Europe after he captured the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, in Mexico, in 1521.

Scientists first discussed tomatoes in 1544.
Pietro Andrea Mattioli, an Italian physician and botanist, named this new fruit pomo d'oro or golden apple [7].

After the Spanish colonization of the Americas, the Spaniards distributed tomato varieties throughout their colonies in the Caribbean.

They also brought it to the Philippines, from where it spread to Southeast Asia and the entire Asian continent.

The Spaniards brought the tomato to Europe, it grew easily in the Mediterranean climate, where cultivation began in 1540.

Tomato was used as a food soon after it was introduced. The first cookbook with a recipe for tomatoes was published in Naples in 1692.

Some regions in Italy only used tomatoes for table decoration purposes before it was incorporated into local dishes in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth centuries.

About 182 million tons of tomatoes were produced worldwide in 2018.

China is the largest tomato producer, accounting for about a quarter of global production, followed by India and the United States.

California processing sites account for 90% of U.S. production and 35% of world production.
