Giorgia Battipaglia, MD, Federico II University of Naples, Naples, Italy, summarizes the results of a study comparing the use of methotrexate and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in combination with cyclosporine in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) undergoing matched unrelated donor (MUD) transplantation with anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) prophylaxis and busulfan-fludarabine reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC). The study reported a lower risk of both acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and a higher probability of GvHD relapse-free survival (GRFS) at two years for patients treated with methotrexate, but there was no difference in relapse incidence, non-relapse mortality (NRM), leukemia-free survival (LFS), and overall survival (OS) between the two patient groups.
