Описание к видео Outdoor VLOG 53: 9-Mile Backcountry Cross-Country Ski Tour from Carson Pass to Big Meadow

This cross-country ski tour was a cake walk compared to xc skiing out to Lake Aloha the other day (   • Outdoor VLOG 52: 15-Mile Backcountry Cross...  ). Don't get me wrong, it's still a workout. But it's a gradually downhill route except for a couple of moderate climbs here and there. The weather was a lot colder and, therefore, provided for much faster snow (again, compared to Friday's trip to Lake Aloha).

The total distance was approximately 9-9.5 miles, which includes a couple of bonus up/downhills on small terrain features (just for fun!). The total elevation gain (also including those extra up/downhills) was just over 1,000 feet. The total time for the trip beginning and ending at the car (and including a 20-30 minute break at Round Lake) was 5 hours.

Please note that this is a point-to-point route (not out-and-back), so you will need to shuttle your vehicles.

On paper, I realize that this tour probably seems pretty easy. But the uphill section coming out of Round Lake is very steep and quite dangerous. Also, the last half mile from Big Meadow down to the trailhead on SR 89 is really sketchy if downhill cross-country skiing is not your thing. As I mentioned in the video, there are significant flat areas along the route. The challenge, however, is that there are always steep sections and challenging terrain features peppered in-between those meadow areas.

Lastly, you have to be pretty good with land navigation skills because it's easy to get turned around in the forested sections between Meiss Meadow and Big Meadow (i.e. half of the route).

As always, know your limits.

The backcountry cross-country skis that I used in this video were Fischer Excursion 88mm with NNN BC Auto bindings. And I was wearing Fischer OTX Adventure boots.
