Step 1. The waistcoat stitch (WST) always starts with a foundation chain and a round of regular single crochet (SC). Complete the first round and you're ready to start with the WST from the second round.

Step 2. Insert hook in the middle of the "V", in between the 2 vertical bars of the SC. Watch the back side of your work: the hook has to come out through the center as well.

Step 3. Yarn over (YO) and pull up a loop. This is called the "golden loop" and you have to pull it up higher than you normally would. This is a critical step for the successful WST, and it's what makes it possible for you to insert your hook through the vertical bars the next time you come around to this stitch! If your waistcoat stitches are too tight for you to comfortably insert your hook through the "V", it probably means you're not pulling this loop high enough. If it's your first time working with this stitch, it should feel as if your tension is too loose - that's how you know it's just right.

Step 4. YO and pull through both loops on hook to complete the WST.

Repeat steps 2-4 to complete the round.

Bonus tip!
Since the tension is very different than most crochet stitches, hook size doesn't matter as much as it does with other stitches. You're going to exaggerate that first loop so much, it won't matter how big or small your hook is. I prefer smaller hooks because it's easier to jam them in between the vertical bars!
