Why Leading with Help, Not a Sales Pitch, Can Make All the Difference
Another project wrapped—and this one came with a great reminder about the power of genuine connection.
I came across the client for this video project in a Facebook photography group. She had posted asking for help and was immediately overwhelmed with comments and offers. Dozens of creatives jumped in, eager to land the job. But instead of throwing my portfolio into the pile, I took a different approach.
The next day, I sent her a simple message: “Hey, just checking in—were you able to get the help you needed?”
That one thoughtful question set me apart. She appreciated that I wasn’t trying to pitch her right away—I just genuinely wanted to help. From there, we started talking about her vision and how she planned to use the video.
She mentioned she needed it for her website’s hero image, which typically doesn’t include audio. Instead of upselling her or complicating things, I tailored the edit specifically for that purpose. No fluff, no pressure—just support.
In the end, it worked out perfectly. The video matched her needs, and we built a working relationship based on trust, not sales tactics.
The takeaway? If your only goal is to make a sale, you might miss the opportunity entirely. But if you lead with care and curiosity, you open the door to long-term relationships and real collaboration.
