Types of Questions in Abstract Reasoning | UCAT 📚

In this video, we look at each type of question in the Abstract Reasoning section of the UCAT. We also share our top tips for each question, and run through a worked example of each one!

INTRO: (00:00)

Timing in AR (00:20) - You will have 13 minutes to complete 55 questions. There are 11 sets of 5 questions, giving you 71 seconds per set.

Type 1 questions (00:45) - Type 1 are the most common type of questions in AR. In this type of question, you are given two sets of shapes - Set A and Set B. You are required to find the pattern in Set A, and the pattern in Set B. Have a look at the example question in the video.

Type 2 questions (4:10) - Type 2 questions involve a sequence of shapes. You will be required to give the next shape or example in the sequence. While the timing for this type of question is shorter, the patterns also tend to be easier to spot. Have a look at the worked example.

Type 3 questions (5:35) - Type 3 questions present you with a relationship between two shapes, which you will then need to apply to another set of shapes. This might be a colour switch, or a change in orientation. Have a look at the example question in the video.

Type 4 questions (7:25) - Type 4 questions are very similar to type 1 questions, as they also involve looking for a pattern for set A and set B. However, in this type of question, you are given a series of shapes and asked which one in the series belongs to set A or set B. Have a look at the worked example.

Top tips for AR (11:20) - Begin by spotting the patterns in set A and set B, rather than wasting time on the test shapes. You can look for similarities between A and B. If you are struggling on a set and a minute has passed, move on to the next set - you can revisit the difficult questions at the end if you have time.
