Getting to Know Plants

Shrubs: These plants have hard but not very thick stems.
 Branches of these plants generally originate from the base of their stems.
 These plants are much taller as compared to herbs but usually shorter than trees.
 Examples - Aloe Vera, Rose plant, Jasmine plant etc.
Trees: These are very tall plants and have very thick and hard stem.
 The branches originate from the upper part of the tree and are very high above the
ground.
 Examples - neem, peepal, coconut tree, mango tree etc.
Creepers and climbers
Creepers: These plants have soft, weak and green stems.
 They cannot stand straight due to their weak stem and instead spread on the
ground.
 Examples - sweet potato, watermelon, pumpkin etc.
Climbers: These are also plants with soft and weak stems but instead of spreading on the
ground
 They take support from a nearby object to climb up.
 Some common examples of creepers are cucumber, bean, grapevine, money-plant
etc.

Stem
 The Stem is responsible for supplying water to all parts of the plant.
 Stem also bears branches, flowers, leaves, fruits and buds.
 The root sucks the water and minerals from the soil and it is the stem’s function is to
push this water upward to other parts of the plant.
Leaf
The leaves of plants are majorly responsible for performing two essential functions for the
plant’s survival and growth.
The two functions of the leaf include transpiration and photosynthesis.
Transpiration: The process through which plants release the excess amount of water
through evaporation
The water taken up by the roots is used by the leaves to make food and the excess water
evaporates out.
 Transpiration helps the plants to cool down.
 In the absence of transpiration, the temperature of the leaf becomes unregulated
which may lead to the eventual death of the plant.
Photosynthesis: The process by which leaves of green plants prepare their food by
using carbon dioxide, water and sunlight as raw materials.
 It occurs in the presence of sun and is aided by the presence of a green pigment in
leaves called chlorophyll.
 Plants also release oxygen in the process and the food prepared is stored in various
parts of the plant.
 In absence of photosynthesis, the plant not able to prepare food for its nourishment
and slowly dies.
Parts of a Leaf
Petiole: This is the stalk through which the leaf and plant are joined together.
Lamina: It is the green portion of any leaf. It is responsible for photosynthesis.
Veins: A number of lines which run through the surface of the leaf are called veins. The
design made the veins is called leaf venation. These transport water and minerals to all
parts.
Midrib: The central, prominent thick structure right in the middle of the leaf is called as
Midrib. It supports the leaf and prevent it from breaking.

Two major types of leaf venation are:
Reticulate venation is said to exist when the veins of the leaf forms a shape similar to
net on any side of the midrib. This type of venation can be observed to exist in dicots like
guava and mango.
Parallel venation is said to exist when the veins of the leaf run parallel to each other.
This type of venation can be observed in monocots like banana, wheat, coconut etc.
Root
It is an important part of the plant. Plants cannot exist without the roots.
