Binary is a base two numbering system meaning that if there is a one in the nth bit (a bit is a 0 or a 1) from the rightmost bit, we must add two to the power of n to our overall sum.

For example, the binary code 0100 is equivalent to four because the one is in the 2nd bit from the rightmost bit resulting in the addition of two to the power of two, which is equivalent to four.

We can combine this with other locations of ones in our string (a string is consecutive bits combined together (e.g. 010110)) to create any number we want!

For example, the binary code 1010 is equivalent to ten because the one in the 3rd bit from the rightmost bit means we add 2 to the power of 3 (which is equivalent to adding eight), and the one in the 1st bit from the rightmost bit means we add 2 to the power of 1 (which is equivalent to adding 2). Eight plus two equals TEN! And you just DECODED BINARY!
