UKRI’s Strategy engagement event in Belfast on 9-10 March brought together students, academics, policymakers and business leaders from across Northern Ireland.

The event focused on the research and innovation being undertaken in Northern Ireland and began with a visit hosted by Ulster University to Future Screens NI. Future Screens NI is delivering technical skills, opportunity and growth across film and broadcast, animation, games and immersive technologies and industries in Northern Ireland.

Next was a networking lunch and roundtable hosted by Invest NI which looked at the role of the city deals in connecting within Northern Ireland and across Ireland, with the UK and beyond.

Two tours In the afternoon showcased Northern Ireland research strengths – AI/cybersecurity at Ulster University where the UKRI team met engineers and industry stakeholders working in spinouts and business development; and agriculture and food security at the Queen’s University Belfast Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS) where there was a show and tell with an audience of technicians, early career researchers, postgraduate researchers and Doctoral Training Partnership students.

The following day, the plenary session held at Belfast Assembly Buildings included a presentation and Q&A on the UKRI strategy followed by an informal networking session. The plenary was chaired by Professor Nola Hewitt-Dundas, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Professor of Innovation Management and Policy at Queen’s University Belfast, and non-executive director to the UKRI Board.

A Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) Networking lunch followed the plenary and provided an opportunity for the UKRI team to hear about the benefits of KTPs including career mobility, collaboration, generating impact from research, and supporting early career researchers. And to talk to early career researchers from KTP programmes and for them to share research and activities.
