Mizen Head & Barleycove

Описание к видео Mizen Head & Barleycove

Ireland's most southwesterly point, Mizen Head in County Cork, is renowned for its stunning landscape and bridge. The cliffs and rocks around Mizen Head are hazardous; during the 19th century, many sailors perished there, and numerous ships sank there. This was a problem because the transatlantic shipping routes passed close by. To make the area safer by alerting ships away from the rocks, the Irish Lights Board approved the opening of the Mizen Head Fog Signal Station in 1906. Even though the station was automated in 1933, three keepers lived there until 1993.

Barleycove
22 kilometers to the southwest of Schull, on the Mizen Peninsula, is Barleycove. The site, which consists of a vast sand dune system and adjacent habitats at the back of the dunes, is sandwiched between two headlands. A little river flowing across the dunes empties into the sea in the south-east of the location. The region is bordered by the open sea on its southern side. Lifebuoys, public parking, and restrooms are available at the beach. In the months when people go swimming, lifeguards are on duty.
