Professional bass angler Oliver Ngy and Riley Kolich hit the James River in Virginia in this episode of Fishing the American Dream with guide Brian Funnell of Virginia Fishing Tours. They’re hitting the tidal fishery for fatty stripers with live bait.

The James River is a crazy-productive fishery and Virginia's largest river. From the confluence of the Cowpasture and Jackson Rivers in the Appalachian Mountains, it flows 348 miles across the entire state, eventually flowing into the Chesapeake Bay.

Since it’s still tidal, the lower river just above the Chesapeake is saltwater and packed with oyster beds and menhaden, which are a magnet for big stripers, which Brian is planning to find.

“So, we're gonna use 4-ounce weights and we’ll fish with six rods,” Funnell says. “If they’re here, we might know it in 120 seconds.”

Once all the rods are rigged and fishing, Ngy gets a hit just off of a piling and starts fighting what they think is a big blue catfish.

“Probably doing all that work for a 3-pound catfish,” Funnell says.

Ngy jokes, “I’ve got aspirations of fishing the catfish master classic.”

Then the fish breaks the surface near the boat.

“My catfish looks a little funny,” Ngy says. “A little jailbird catfish…that is a dense little striper. I think he’s as tired as I am”

After a busy morning of healthy stripers and hard-fighting catfish, Kolich finishes with first, most, and biggest fish of the trio.

Day two finds the group exploring new water, destroying huge crappie, and putting Funnell on his first-ever largemouth bass.
