A senior madrasah student in Batu Pahat broke down in tears in the dock today after pleading guilty to charges of sexual assault against a junior male student last month.

Muhammad Aqmal Md Radzi, 18, wept as the charge was read by the court interpreter before Sessions Court judge Sayani Mohd Nor.

According to the charge, Aqmal committed the sexual offence against the 12-year-old victim in a madrasah between 3 am and 4 am last month (November).

He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and caning upon conviction.

The crime reportedly occurred while the victim was sleeping in the room in the madrasah with three other friends.

After the assault, Aqmal allegedly told the victim not to disclose the incident to anyone and promised to take him out for a meal.
