Hunting pressure, how much does it really affect deer?

Hunting Pressure: just how easily it’s produced and what to do about it. What is hunting pressure? its the negative impact on deer behavior that you or other hunters cause in your hunting area on whitetail deer. But how easily do deer become “pressured” and it start affecting your hunting success?

Two things to consider. First the King Ranch collared buck study. In this study mature bucks were collared with radio transmitters and tracked during a hunting season. The results: they found that these bucks avoided deer stands exclusively after just one encounter with a hunter. Just one! That could be that they saw, smelled, or heard a hunter. So, all it takes is one interaction, a very minimal amount to cause substantial pressure according to this study. Second, I recently interviewed Jim Hole Jr. of Classic Outfitters Alberta Canada. Jim has been chasing mature whitetails of Alberta for over 30 years as a guide, outfitter, and accomplished hunter. Jim is a noise freak like me! According to Jim, to be successful on these deer you can’t just be quiet.. you have to be super quiet! dead quiet! You see, every tiny little sound does matter, and adds to the pressure in your area. This pressure changes deer behavior, and can be the make or break that determines the difference between an awesome and successful season, and one ending in a bowl of tag soup!
